چکیده

Executive Summary Growing concern over global climate change has triggered a search for methods to reduce overall carbon dioxide emissions. Reducing emissions from the heating and cooling systems of the 70 plus million single family North American residential units would assist significantly in this effort. However, given the current financial strains on homeowners, it is essential to find the most cost effective manner of carbon emissions reduction possible. In this report, the carbon dioxide emissions of ground source heat pumps system, in comparison to a number of conventional residential heating and cooling systems are compared on a full source energy basis. Given that the predominant system in American residences is a conventional natural gas furnace and electric air conditioner, this constitutes the base case. The carbon emission reductions possible with higher cost system alternatives were compared in 10 widely differing locations in North America.

Indirect carbon reduction by residential vegetation and planting strategies in Chicago, USA.

Concern about climate change has evoked interest in the potential for urban vegetation to help reduce the levels of atmospheric carbon. This study applied computer simulations to try to quantify the modifying effects of existing vegetation on the indirect reduction of atmospheric carbon for two residential neighborhoods in north-west Chicago. The effects of shading, evapotranspiration, and wind...

Simulation of passive ground-coupled cooling system for a house in hot humid climate

Abstract The US government has set a target of reducing CO2 emissions by 20% below the 2005 targets by the year 2020. Literature review reveals that residential buildings contribute over 20% of the total emissions mainly used for space heating, cooling, water heating and lighting. In hot humid climates, the concern is mainly for cooling and hot water that account for over 50% of the total resid...

Determining the optimal size of a ground source heat pump within an air-conditioning system with economic and emission considerations

One of the most challenging issues in modern-day building energy management involves equipping the buildings with more energy efficient facilities. In this paper, a hybrid system for cooling/heating for a residential building is developed and optimized. The system consists of a ground source heat pump (GSHP) as well as an electric chiller (EC) and boiler. The model is implemented in MATLAB ...

Climate Impacts on Extreme Energy Consumption of Different Types of Buildings

Exploring changes of building energy consumption and its relationships with climate can provide basis for energy-saving and carbon emission reduction. Heating and cooling energy consumption of different types of buildings during 1981-2010 in Tianjin city, was simulated by using TRNSYS software. Daily or hourly extreme energy consumption was determined by percentile methods, and the climate impa...

Energy Saving and Carbon Reduction in the Operation Stage of Cross Laminated Timber Residential Buildings in China

This paper focused on energy consumption and carbon emission for heating and cooling during a building’s operation stage, and examined the energy effects of using Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) as an alternative building material to reinforced concrete (RC) in China’s 31 key cities located in different climate zones. The authors designed two seven-story residential buildings, which were construct...
